Default Animations in background mode

Is it possible to make animations in background mode, I have tried to save tiffs, and then construct afterwards, but it does seem to require an active graphics window, and will not save directly from the data. Is there any way around this?

If data files are to be saved, is it possible to only save a selection of data files automatically? (i.e from timestep 3000 to 3500 or something similar)
