Can fluent model aircraft icing promble?

I want to model the aircraft in-fight ice accretion. Can fluent make it? If you will email me, I will be appreciate it very much.

Hi,

I have a problem in which a heater is on leading edge of an airfoil and this airfoil is placed in Icing wind tunnel. Air is inside the tunnel at -5C. And water spray by using atomizer is also there.

I have to figure out what will be the temperature of airfoil at different places.

Could you tell me which model should i use? Currently i am using (solidification+VOF). But i am not getting solidification.

I don't have any clue please guide me.

It is very urgent.

Many Many thanks in advance.
Regards,
Saima

Icing accreation using CFX

Hi all,

I have similar problem, I'm not sure that solidification model can help since the phenomene of water is not similar to casting because of the supercooledwater dropletes wich change phase into ice while touching the solid surface.
I can resume my experience with icing that you need to define water dropletes in air as multiphase multiflow domain using Eulrien model / lagrangian in addition to turbulance model like SST or k-e.

The main difficulty is how to introduce water to CFX or Fluent as suppercooled droplets or as ice to calculate the quantity of ice to be accreated, and how to deal with changing geomety (mesh moving) every time a new layer of ice is formed?

We wish that someone can help us in that particular obstacle...

Good Luck

Hi Palomer,

I used fluent software. I havent used Sofidification model. I just used Lagrangian model (DPM).

I also vary the thermal properties with respect to function i.e in material i defined thermal property funtion of temp.

My objective was to calculate the droplet % on airfoil leading edge.

I am gng to attach a paper may be it helps u. It is a Pdf.

Regards,
Saima

Some scenarios are of such a complexity that call for the need of specialized CFD tools. Conjugate heat transfer analyses on in-flight icing applications, such as the typical hot-air ant-icing system of an aircraft that you have described, usually require several pieces of a puzzle to be solved in order to provide an accurate simulation (such as producing an external air-flow solution, determining the droplet impingement, performing the subsequent ice accretion, solving for the internal flow conditions and then computing the resulting heat-transfer analysis)

You might want to take a look at FENSAP-ICE for this type of simulations, which bundles by the way with many CFD air-flow solvers and post-processors; and also at OptiGrid (automatic mesh adaptation and CAD reconstruction software) a time-saver when it comes to remeshing.

Feel free to private-message me, and as well do conduct the research on your own, the results speak for themselves!

How do I select solver options for external flow over an aircraft by fluent?

hi
I have several problems about external flow over an aircraft with fluent.
its mesh is tetrahedral(3D) with about 3000000 milions node.
These options is set in fluent:
pressure-based
steady-state
air: ideal gas
turbulent: sparlat almaras model
BC: 1- pressure farfield(mach number=.8, flow direction(1 0 0))
, 2- wall for aircraft body
coupled algorithm
cfl=200
use hybrid initialization & FMG( Full Multigrid) initilization
in these conditions, Cl,Cd have high scale( about 10+8). thesolution is converged but i think this solution is wrong.
please help me about this problem

Hey,

Ive been trying to simulate ice accretion using fluent. Ive used DPM and injection options to model the water droplets. But the problem is, the water droplets barely strike the airfoil. How do I go about it. And apart from that how do i go about the accretion procedure? Please help.

Instead of taking large area for water ...take small par at centre.
Then you will see water droplet at the leading edge of airfoil.

ok thank you... you've got any idea about accretion in fluent ?

Saima June 11, 2011 01:02

Actually my objective was to measure the water catch rate not the ice accretion.
So i used DPM, with some droplet diameter distribution and I had information of mean diameter liquid water contents etc.

HI ALL
Have you succeeded in simulating ice accretion using Fluent? I am facing a similar problem and I would like to know something more.
ThankS
