Fluid Structure Interaction

Hi. Can I seek some advice about a CFD problem??? I might be doing a project, which involves 6 Degree of Freedom Navier Stoke Equations. This means that the CFD problem has the fluid flow and solid body motion solved simultaneously. The fluid flow influence the motion of the solid body, while the solid body motion influence the fluid flow. Can this be solved using FLUENT software? Currently, I know that in FLUENT solver, the motion of the solid body is fixed arbitrarily and then we find the fluid flow field. But in actual situation, the fluid flow field will influence the solid body motion and in turn influences the fluid flow. Besides using Fortran programming, what other software can I use to do that problem??? Is there a new version of FLUENT software coming up whereby I can do this fluid structure interaction (the fluid affect solid body motion, solid body motion affect fluid. But are solved simultaneously).

Re: Fluid Structure Interaction

I think you can use FIDAP which is specifically meant for Fluid- Structure Interaction.

Hello Apollo

As per my knowledge, in Fluent we can perform only one way of fluid structure interactions. I think in the newer version of CFX i.e., CFX 5.7, both ways of fluid to solid and solid to fluid interactions can be performed.

Re: Fluid Structure Interaction

Fidap allows both way of interaction. However, the deformation should not be very large. The geometry / mesh topology should not change.

hai Nilesh,

"Both ways of interation"--by this you mean that physical disturbance of solid can be applied on to the fluid using FIDAP? Can you tell still more clearly? thanks and regards karthik

Re: Fluid Structure Interaction

Fluid will cause the deformation in the solid, which in turn will change the boundary of the domain and mesh. The fluid equation will be solved in this new domain. The iterations will be repeated till the steady state is reached.

If you are a member of www.fluentusers.com they have a 6 DOF UDF that you can save.
