Running Fluent
 

I was wondering if it is better to run Fluent 6.2 on

a 755 MHz Processor UNIX machine with 2GB RAM

OR

a 3 GHz Processor Windows Dell with 1GB RAM

any advice would help. thank you.

How big is your case? If the case is small, then the extra processor on the Windows machine will pay off (even though you're losing a decent amount of processor and memory to the OS over a UNIX system). If your case is large then stay away from the Windows machine.

I've heard 600,000 cells per Gb of available RAM (but I tend to think it's more like 500,000, and half of that if you're using a coupled solver, but it's just my opinion and I don't really have any documented info to back it up, but watching how my machines handle different cases, that's what I've picked up). Depending on your windows machine (Dell's tend to run a lot of stuff in the background) you might only have 700Mb or 512Mb truly available, and it could even be less. If you're running cases under 100,000 then you might be able to run well on the Windows machine.

Hope this helps. It's not gospel either. You might have better luck running on the windows machine, and other people my have as well, but from my experiences I avoid running on a Windows machine even with 2Gb unless it's a small case (>100,000 cells).

I agree with Jason. Windows is not a good choice.

I would add: Linux is free. You can download user friendly distributions from a lot of sites and install them also on the DELL system, maybe creating a dual boot system.

Usually Dell's PCs fully support Linux without difficulties. For example, I run SuSE 9.2 on both a DELL Dimension desktop and on a DELL Inspiron notebook without problems.
