Hi Everybody,

We intend to lease the Fluent in company soon and I am currently researching on the available softwares in the market that I may use to generate mesh with ease.

I have heard that Hypermesh is mainly for surface meshes and is not the best choice for creating volume meshes especially for CFD applications where complicated grid refinement, in particular boundary layer mesh, is required. Any comment in this regard?

Please advise me concerning the best mesh generation softwares in the market for CFD applications that can be easily integrated with fluent.

Thanks Mohammad

Hi, Maybe you can try Gridgen15.If you are doing research work, writing codes by yourself is a good choice. best wishes,

Hi Dr. Kazemi, I have been using Gambit which is developed by FLUENT for years and haven't had any major problem with that up to now. The other options that are common in industries are ICEM-CFD and Gridgen.

What kind of application are you going to work on?

Good luck

BTW: I read your discussion with that impolite person and I am just sorry to see these kind of people here in a scientific forum.

Dear Amir,

Thanks for your good comments. There is a possibility that I would need to use a mesh generation software since the geometry that I am encountering with (HDD) is fairly complicated and includes a lot of small features that should be carefully captured using a refined grid structure. I guess that Gambit might be still able to serve me for this kind of complicated mesh generation but I suspect that there should be some other software, especially designed for complex mesh generation, that can accelerate the process of mesh generation.

The software that you introduced me seem to be sophisticated based on the short glance I had at their website and hence I need to do more research about them.

BTW. Thanks for your support. I guess those people do not have that much technical knowledge to respond legitimate inquiries and that is why they try to lead a technical discussion to the place where they are stronger at (i.e. offensive discussion).

if the geometry fairly complicated gambit is not so easy going. what we are doing is generate the model in some other software like hypermesh, or solidowrks and then we import that in gambit in iges format. then the meshing work is done by gambit. i feel this combination is better when it comes to complicated geomtery.

HI, QUESTION IS THAT WHAT TYPE OF PROBLEM YOU WILL ENCOUNTER

The most geometrically complicated problem that I have worked on was cooling flow through water jackets of IC engines which took us a long time to get the pre-processing done. We were doing the whole 3-D modeling in Solidworks and exporting that as SAT file and importing that to Gambit and do the mesh generation and refinements there. We had quite a bit of problem with the small surfaces produced automatically in solidworks due to fillets and surface manipulations which were conflicting with the mesh size as the smallest surfaces were somtimes pretty smaller than considered mesh size. therfore, we ended up doing some simplification to the geometry and proceed the CFD simulation. That's the procedure that I have been using for years and got it to work at the end of the day. there might be some less difficult ways out there that I might not be awared of. Some other mesh generation might have better abilities to handle small surfaces problem but I don't have any experience with them. I know ICEM-CFD is pretty pupular in industries.

Thanks everybody for your comments. You can find a picture of HDD at:

I will be simulating airflow for that geometry and as you can see it has a lot of miniature features. The objective is to understand the influence of those miniature features on the flow disturbances and improve the structure/geometry of head stack assembly (HAS) in order to achieve less flow-induced vibrations. I am going to look at the mesh generation software that Amir introduced. Meanwhile, any other suggestion is welcomed.
