Fluent vs. CFX
 

Hello,

I am about to simulate a big atrium with Fluent. however i was wondering if i should switch to cfx for the thermal and fire/smoke simulation since i saw some very good cfx sample cases for that matter.

could anyone post a comparison or some advantages of either one please?

i am not sure about higher versions of cfx, but i used to work with cfx4.3 - cfx4.4 ..the only point i want to say is i found that cfx had very good documentation, at least an example on every case they do, and with fluent the tutorials are very less compared to what fluent can do.. so might not have come across any example fire/simulation (as i rem cfx 4.4 has an example of one such case in example manual)

You might consider looking at NIST's fire code FDS, which is specifically designed for applications like this. Also, it's free.

Hi,

My few cents,

Be very carefull with FDS, it soemtime gives wrong solution due to it treatment of the combustion and radition with regards to the mesh size! Also the lack of wall function in the LES model sometimes gives problem with separation of the smoke layer!

We use CFX very often for ventilation and fire simulations. It works very good and is very stable.
