MFIX

what is MFIX?i want to use fluent for simulation of gas-solid system.is the MFIX an ability of fluent?

Re: MFIX

MFIX is a standalone FORTRAN code which uses the Eulerian model to solve problems related to gas-solid flows. You can find it at http://www.mfix.org

Fluent implements a part of the features offered by MFIX, but it's a lot easier to use.

dear ap! thank you for your guidance.i use fluent, but i dont know how can i model the solid phase in gas-solid system.can u help me plz? which version of fluent is better for gas-solid system? regards

Re: MFIX

I works with FLUENT 6.1.22. It can manage the solid phase both with a Eulerian and a Langrangian approach.

You have to chose on the basis of the volume fraction of the solid particles in your flow. If you're over 10%, you have to use the Eulerian model, while if you're under 10% you should consider the Langrangian approach (Discrete Particle Model).

If you give more details on the system you want to simulate, i'll be more specific.

Re: MFIX

hi dear! i use fluent for simulation of "fluidized bed dryer". how can i enter the solid partickle diameter?

ap February 2, 2005 09:04

Re: MFIX

If you use the Eulerian model, you specify the diameter of the solid particles in the Define -> Phases -> Set panel.

For the DPM, the diameter is set in the Define->Model->Discrete phase -> Injection -> Create panel.

Re: MFIX

dear ap! thank you for useful guidance. now,i want to describe my project for you: ***simulation of fluidized bed drying using fluent*** a wet-solid flow(like as polypropylene which is wetted with an volatile liuid like as heptane-weight percent of liquid in solid id 50%)which is consist of wet-particle(average diameter of solid=0.5mm)enter to a vertical cylinder from top.a hot gas flow(air with temp=400K)enter to the cylider from bottom.a perforated plate is installed at the bottom of cylinder for uniform flow of hot gas.hot gas has two duty: 1-heating of wet-solid to evaporate the liquid of that,2-fluidization of wet-particles.during this process, volatile liquid evaporates and enter to the hot gas phase and exit from top of the cylinder.and solid which is dryed, exit from bottom.this process is continious. now i want to help me for modelling of this system in fluent. i want to know step by step filling of all of section in DPM-model and EULER-model. i'll be very greatful for your useful guidance,my dear friend! king regards masood

Re: MFIX

Hi Masood, first of all, with such an high solid particles volume fraction, you can't use the DPM model.

The Eulerian model is suitable for such a kind of flow, but the mass transfer has not been implemented in FLUENT 6.1 (it is in FLUENT 6.2).

If you want to use FLUENT 6.1, you need to add the transport equations needed to model the mass transfer during the drying process.

However FLUENT 6.2 will be released in February, so you could decide to wait for it.

P.S. Step by step setup of the DPM and Eulerian models are explained in FLUENT manual. Just read the proper sections and do the tutorials.

hi ap! what means :"If you want to use FLUENT 6.1, you need to add the transport equations needed to model the mass transfer during the drying process"? it means i should use UDF?and for only for mass transfer or all of transport equations? do u know what is the price of fluent 6.2? regards masood

Re: MFIX

FLUENT 6.1 does not implement the species transport in the Eulerian model. So you need to add the equations of the species transport you need to model the drying process.

All other transport equation are implemented in FLUENT. You just need to add the lacking ones.

I don't know the price of FLUENT 6.2. I work in a university so I don't directly buy the license.

mfix software

hello. I have installed the MFIX application in windows to simulate my thesis. I want to compare the result of 2D fluidized bed simulations between two softwares which are fluent and MFIX.
I have done these simulations in the two softwares and I’ve got their data. But I don’t know how to post- process the data in MFIX software and get the plots like the way I get in the fluent software. For example I have some files in .SPX format, but I don’t know how to get plots of phases volume fraction or pressure, different contours and etc. In addition, I have installed the “ Para View “ software but I don’t know how I can work with it, because when I open the file in ".res " format suddenly the paraview closes. So I really appriciate it if you could help me on this.
Thanks a lot for your time and attention.

mfix software

also, my simulation data is :
2D fluidized bed.
11200 cell in mesh.
eulerian method.
time step 10e-5 in 12 second.
I have some question about DT and DT min.
I need someone who has worked with mfix and help me in this field.
