simulate multiphase flow

Hi all I want to stimulate a three phase flow(water liquid ,oil and natural gas)in a perforated pipe. (look here http://www.geocities.com/enasere/well.JPG )
The water/oil mixture enters from the perforations in the horizonta part whereas the NG is injected in the vertical part to lift the mixture to surface. Anyone can help me in this. Whether I should use vof or not? If yes, please give some detail, how? otherwise suggest me some other method. Thanks |

I don't think that your flow will be stratified in the vertical well so you couldn't use the VOF method.

I working on a similar problem so i would advice that u should first try simple geometry (depending upon the your own preference)like:
1) seeing the flow field development/effects of water-oil in horizontal pipe section only (assuming no gas is coming in from perforations). This will simplfy the probelm dealing water and oil only. 2) vertcial pipe flow with water-oil mixture entering from the bottom and gas injection in the riser to see the gas-lift effect. above will give u rough estimates/idea and confidence in simulating the whole system. the choice of model will depend on the point of interest i.e if u interested in seeing the interface movement of the phases along the geometry than VOF but remeber it shares a single momentum eqaution for the all the phases (stating velocity for the primary phase and volume fraction for the rest of the phases). however if u interested in seeing detail distirbution of the phases, flow fields etc not the interface movment than try Eulerian multiphase model. hope this helps. cheers Aly |

Dear Aly I'm a master degree student and my thesis is about separation of dispersed oil droplets from water by parallel plates and I want to simulate it with fluent package. in my problem oil droplets (distributed with rammler method) flow with continuous phase between two inclined parallel plate then drops rise up to the interface (we neglect distortion,collision of drops and coalescence near the interface)and produce an oil layer which flows upward. since you have been experienced related problem, may be you can help me. mu question is that can fluent simulate this problem and which model is better.I think discrete phase model is a good choice (oil < 10% fractional volume) but can this model simulate interface of separated phase and it's velocity field. thanks for your attention.

sorry for late repsonse.
i am also a new learner ..... still struggling with my simulation . I have'nt done work on the oil-water simulation but i think u might find more information in papers by A.J. Karabelas. Your choice of model is OK on the basis of the fluent manual but as far as i know if the point of interest is interface between the phases that VOF model is best for other details Eulerain model is known to give better results. hope this helps. |
