Open channel flows in general, rivers, oceans are good examples

free surface means that the surface motion is unknown of the problem and it is going to be part of the solution. you can set up some boundary condition on the free surface (such as no heat flow) but its motion is going to be determined by the code.

Free surfaces have zero gradients associated with them. A possible way to take this in account is by using a outflow BC in Fluent 6.x series. They are important for jet flow simualtions. If u want to simulate bubble columns and have only air at the top then-degassing bc are used. They are different. Let me know if this helps.
