Default Two-phase open channel flow

Thanks for your reply to my earlier question. I have another one: Im planning to use the VOF model to simulate flow in a pond. What is the purpose of specifying an axis zone in the geometry? How does it relate to a two-phase flow and can i perform a the sim without having it?
