anyone did propeller validation before?
 

Hi,

I have never done anything related to propeller before. Please kindly give me information based on your experience.

Goal: Validate an experimental data of propeller in hover condition.

Known: thrust, RPM, Power

Method used: Momentum theory using Fan BC in Fluent.

What I have done: Calculate the pressure jump and set it in the fan BC. Use pressure inlet, fan, pressure outlet BC with 0 Pa total gauge pressure at inlet and 0 Pa static gauge pressure at outlet.

Where I am now? I got m dot (mass flow) which is 2 times of what I should have.

There are some public domain results for Navy Propellors. Can use mixing plane or sliding mesh (rotating). Here's one : http://www.fluent.com/about/news/new...1/pdfs/s10.pdf

I want to try using actuator disc, because it is likely that the propeller will be changed later.

any info about this?

I search the forum and find some discussion about it. I tried what they suggested, however the results is not good.

to assume that the outlet static pressure is equal to atmosphere, how far should I put the domain distance from the disc?

difficult to say but up and downstream distances of 5 and 15 diameters seems ok. Outlet static pressure = rho*g*h for hydrostatic submersed pressure - ensure bc is far enough away from prop.
