Combination of Hex and Tet-Elements in GAMBIT

Hello World.

I'm trying to mesh a volume. Unfortunately (or as a matter of fact) the computational domain contains a radius.

I still want to use hexahedron elements in the main part of the computational domain, so I decided to mesh the part near the radius with tetrahedron elements to deal with the radius.

Have a look at the picture, which will illustrate the problem: http://therealsega.th.funpic.de/open...tetra_area.jpg

The complete domain is still defined as one volume (and a volume group as well).

So, how is it possible to tell GAMBIT to mesh with tetrahedron elements in the designated area and to mesh with hexahedron element in the rest?

Maybe I have to split the domain, but I don't know how this can be achieved.

Thanks for your help. Sebastian

Re: Combination of Hex and Tet-Elements in GAMBIT

Hi,

Correct, you should split your domain in 3 volumes. I see from the picture that you already defined 2 faces. Just split your main volume with those faces ;)

geometry -> volume -> split volume -> split with: faces (real)

BTW: I'm afraid your mesh will have poor quality if you fill the in between volume with tet elements..

I hope this helps! /JB

Thank you JB.

I toyed around with GAMBIT and found a way to created the desired mesh.

I think in this combination the quality is not as bad as it would have been in the first approach ... Or do you think different?

switch your tetra-volume into pave-volume, and you will have only hexa-

Yeah I think it was a good Idea to do what you did. You improved the mesh quality for sure.

Regarding element type, it really depends on what you're simulating.
