mach number and selection of the fluent solver
Hi everyone!
I am using fluent version 6.3 to simulate a compressible flow with the Mach number of 1.8. I met a great deal of convergence difficulty when I use the density based solver, while my computation gets convergent easily when I use the pressure based couple solver. My problem is at what range the fluent6.3 pressure based solver can give reliable results? And at what mach number one must use the density based solver? Thanks in advance!

The pressure based solver can be used for a wide range of flow simulation cases, even compressible and supersonic flows. You should only use the density based solver when you have tightly coupled flow parameters, from density, energy, momentum, as well as combustion and species transport.
You should use the pressure based solver for supersonic aerodynamics. You should use density based if you are doing supersonic flows with combustion and heat transfer (such as the ramjet). Hope that helps.

I should just add that you can in fact use either solver for almost all your cases. But as you've experienced, the density based solver takes much more effort and troubleshooting in controling convergence. Only use the density based solver when the performance is superior compared to the pressure based solver.
