Adsorption Modeling

I am interested in modeling adsorption/desorption in a liquid-solids slurry stream. I am wondering what is the best strategy for keeping track of the amount of species that adsorb and desorb from the solids. I imagine I need to create a sink to withdraw the soluble species from the liquid phase. But then how do I keep track of what solids have adsorbed the species, and the solids that haven't?

One idea I had was to create a third phase, which would be solids that have adsorbed the species. So when solids are to adsorb, the solids from the original phase magically become solids belonging to the second solids phase. Is this remotely possible? Any idea what such UDF would look like?

Otherwise is it possible to create a field variable that mimics the solids phase (i.e. travels together) but has no mass, it just stores data representing it having adsorbed the species? Does this make any sense?

I appreciate any ideas. Thanks.
