Pathline colored by time = residence time

Hi,

I have a question about the colored pathline by time (display...) : Is it equal to ressdence time ? . I have a steady simulation of a water flow in a tank and I want to know about the residence time of a "particle of water fluid" injected at the inlet to til it goes out at the outlet :
- does pathline colored by time will give me the right residence time ?
- Or should I use the particle tracking ? (but there is not water-liquide in th material panel of particles)
What is the difference between these 2 anyways ?

Thx
