Modeling of melt pool geometry!

Hi, i have tried to model the melt pool geometry in laser processing using FLUENT. Following are the case that i did; 1. First of all, i ran the simulation just to check heat transfer (using only energy equation). it was perfectly fine. 2. Second, i turned on the flow equations and Melting/solidification as well, since i have to check the velocity profile in the melt pool. At this stage, the solution is diverged. i have changed under relaxation factors as well as residuals, but still having same problem. Anyone who has got some idea or anyone who has worked on this before, any help would be highly appreciated, regards, Fareed

check out the metal properties. there is a sudden change between solid and liquid state and could create numerical problems at the interface... you should smoothen the jump.

thanks for you reply. i am using viscosity as a function of temperature. from 300 to 1743 degree K, it is 1e08. from 1745 onwards it is 0.0067. do you think this change of viscosity in 2 degrees can cause a problem ? regards.

very probably. you jump of more than 10 orders of magnitude...
you should not set a very different viscosity for the solid phase. Try the solidification/melting model. or add a sink momentum like in the solidification example in the fluent manual. however it has to be calibrated. |
