I want to set up a calculation for a supersonic gas jet impinging on a liquid surface
I heard that Fluent is not able to model compressible supersonic flows while using the VOF scheme and that it is very unstable.
Is this true ?

I would agree, VOF and compressible flow do not go together very well. But you are now talking about pushing CFD to its edge. I dont think any commerical CFD software can solve this problem.

Hi,
i am also analyzing supersonic gas jets (oxygen) impinging on a liquid in fluent so as to track the interface and analyze splashing/sloshing phenomenon.
Original problem is in 3D with 6 nozzles but i am starting in 2D with 2 nozzles (taking a plane).
I have used transient,VOF method, k-epsilon, used surface tension, wall adhesion. at the inlet, velocity has been specified with respect to mach no.
Variable time stepping method was used and i could iterate to 1 sec (no of time step 5000). No of time steps will be increased for increasing to 5/10 secs.
Can you tell if i should go for 3D instead of 2D? i am not able to decide.
Also, if steady state is attainable in such situation.
