i7-3820 CPU compared to my old E6300

My new PC:
Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge 4-core 3.6GHz Asus P9X79 LE LGA2011 ATX Motherboard G.Skill 16GB Kit (4x4GB) DDR3 Ripjaws Z C11 2133MHz RAM Intel 520 Series 120GB 2.5" SSD SATA3 550/500 It runs about 7.5 times faster than my old machine which was: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 2-core 1.86GHz 6GB DDR2 RAM Dell motherboard If I turn hyper threading on in the 3820, (ie 8-cores) its about 10% faster than with it off (4-cores). I ran the same openFoam model on both machines - it had 2.5 million cells, 240 iterations to converge in 1 hour (running SIMPLE). On the old machine this took about 7.5 hours. Thanks for the comments on the forum which were helpful in deciding what to buy. |
