Hello
I want to ensemble my own PC. The goal is to use mesh generation software (ICEM CFD specially) and OpenFOAM. But, my budget is small, around 800 euros. Could you give any piece of advice about the basic hardware that I must have??? Thank you in advance. |

It is possible to build a small cluster of servers for that price. This can be done from 2nd hand equipment available on Ebay. However it requires extensive researching the CFD performance (mostly memory access ) of the items for sale and understanding how you can combine purchases of CPus and server boxes, to get an optimum number of servers, performance and price.

If the PC is just for learning how to use the software with the usual tutorial examples then you dont need anything specific or expensive.
This changes once you want to tackle some real world CFD problems. We would need to know the size of the models you are planning to work with. |

I started on an old dual core Celeron 1.6mhz laptop with 1Gb memory ... I just happened to have one lying around. You can get these now for less than 200 Euros. The performance for the basic tutorials is ok. A little bit slow for the CHTmultiregion tutorial but still not too bad.

Thank you very much for the replies .
I think I did not explain properly my situation. I am running several cases (Combustion and turbulence) and I need something to work with 1.000.000 of cells. In addition, I need a PC to use for one year or more.. So, It can not be totally basic. My initial idea is this: Intel core i5-3570 3.4 Ghz Box Asrock H61MV-ITX Corasair vengeance DDR3 2133 PC3-17000 8GB 2x4GB CL11 Red Hitachi deskstar 7K4000 4TB SATA III EVGA GeForce GTX 750 2GB GDDR5 I need a mini pc due to I travel a lot :S Thank you very much. |
