PattiMichelle is on a distinguished road
I've seen opinions both ways for Finite Difference and Finite Volume solvers and MPICH/OpenMPI - that hyperthreading competes well with physical cores, and that it does not. The closest I've been able to come is with WRF weather software (finite difference) which sees performance gains with added physical cores, but once you start adding virtual cores (think i7's here), then performance begins to degrade.

So In my experience, more physical cores is always better for these kinds of calculations, but virtual cores not - at least when you're pushing the limits of your workstation. So in a choice between Intel and AMD - it seems like AMD would win - unless the high end Intel's aren't relying on virtual cores any more to get core count up?

Information? Thanks!
