Thanks flotus1 for all the suggestions. I have changed the monitor for saving a few euros...

Anybody has a suitable test case in OpenFOAM 2.4?Because I guess starting with my meshes is not a good idea (at first I cannot share it!)

I expect to receive my new machine next week
Anybody with an AMD FX and similar settings to the previously mentioned that would like to make comparissons?

My new computer has arrived.

Feel free to send me ideas for test of performance.

Is there any way to check if quad channel memmory is working properly? It's to say, do I need to open my case to check something or can this be done in some place of system settings tab?

Regards,

Tensi

hi,
install AIDA64, it can check memory for you with all details, i put results of my pc which has 2 channel , 2 channel must be near to 26Gig/sec and results prove that.

After the small experience that i summoned i would advise to get a solution that provides a bigger amount of ram.
I first opted to build a cluster out of 4 X FX8120 CPUs using mATX boards, and a total of 80 GB of RAM. In comparison with an FX9590 and 32 GB of RAM it reduced the time to 1/4 (at least). I used 1 400 Watt PSU for 2 Nodes putting them with Y adapters togheder. It is a bit tricky to start them but once on there are no problems. The cost of building such a cluster was about 230 Euros pro cluster. You should add also the costs of an hub and cables (about 45 Euros). CPU and RAM i bought ober Ebay at decent price (80 Euros pro CPU and 80 pro 16 GB RAM). Mainboard and 60 GB SSD were new (about 30 Euros each). CPUs can be undervolted (about 5-8%) with an 5% underclock, for lower power consumption (togheder idle should be around 120 Watt and under full load about 500 Watt)
Added you come about 1000 Euros and get more performance than any other single configuration can get you (no mather what CPUs you buy).
Drawback to this configuration is meshing. When the mesh exceeds the RAM capability of a cluster than you should look for other methods of meshing.

Second option (my current project)
- this NEW mainboard http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/moth...0/H8QGi_-F.cfm
With some effort you can get it (in europe) for about 650-700 Euros
- 2 or 4 Opterons (12 or 16 Core) - on Ebay for 1 pice also under 90 Euro to be found
- RAM - as much as you can affoard - it should cost about 130 Euros for 32 GB sets. Buy 2, 4 sets or whatever your budget fits.
Major drawback - only 1 expansion slot (only 1 Video card)
With an appropiate PSU you come about 1500 Euros for an 2 CPU (some 32 Threads) with 96 Gb. Power consumption, no ideea at the moment, but i am looking for a 1000+ Watt PSU.
Advantage should be the possibility of further expansion with limited costs.
No ideea what the performance benefits are. I am also unctuous to find out and also to overcome the RAM drawback.

Hope it helped my so far experience.

Thanks Guys, for providing information on getting a new system for CFD simulations. As I came to know, the commercial CFD software technician told me to switch off hyperthreading in BIOS. I am doing CFD simulations on Intel Xeon E5-1680-v2-3GHz (Octacore processor) with 32 GB RAM. Also for Mr. Tensian. Please avoid using all the cores when running parallel processing. 1 or 2 cores are needed for operating system and other apps working background. Thanks a lot guys. I had a plan to buy AMD FX-6300. But now after reading this thread, I will think about what to get.
