64 bits cluster

Hello everybody. I´m trying to configure a 64 bits cluster with fluent (by now). I don´t know if i should use Vista, XP 64 bits, or any other operative system to do this task. I want to use all the RAM (8Gb) installed in all nodes.

¿Could you give me an advise?

Time ago i have configured a cluster using 32 bits XP and fluent. I suppose that procedings for setting up this new cluster would be exactly the same. ¿Right?

Hi Jonathan,

XP 64 edition could be your best choice. Windows XP 32 edition supports Maximum 3.2GB RAM, no matter how many RAM sticks you have on your motherboard.

Best to go with 64-bits XP if you have more than 3 GIG of memory. Win200XServer + PAE will support more memory than that, but I think PAE is a kluge.

There is also an issue with the number of *sockets* (CPU "cans") on your motherboards. I believe XP and Vista only support two, so, theoretically, if you had two quad-core CPUs, then you could get 8 processors per node. If you have more than two CPU sockets on the motherboard, you have to go with Win200XServer, which supports up to 4 sockets, Win200XServerEnterprise supports up to 8 sockets (8 quad-cores = 32 processors per node if you have one of the big TYAN servers).

Of course, Linux supports as many CPUs as you have.

I have one socket core quad proccesor (4 nodes per CPU). This is first step cluster. Once this one is working i will try linux cluster, but i have to learn a bit of linux.
