I think the HP elite book 8730w is one of the fastes notebooks available. Up to 8 gb ram and quad core processor.
In use the 8730w with dual core T9600 processor and for now 2 gb of ram. Works good for stuctural fem analysis and small cfd. But for more serious cases i'm short on memory, so i have to upgrade my memory.

If your doing sims of any appreciable size having space to upgrade and good ventilation are key benefits.

So, if your sims are big, don't. Get a big dekstop/workstation instead.

You also really don't want to be using meshing and post processing software on a small monitor (admittedly, a 2nd donkey monitor could be run from a laptop but I find it less convenient).

bramv - I'm surprised you've 24GB of RAM when Dell say the limit is 4x4GB... or 16GB!

Do you have 6GB DIMMs?!?!

Just ask your dell/hp sales contact, there is more available then on the website.
And above is also true: if you have only one resource then choose a good desktop not a laptop
We have a cluster at our disposal to do the solving stage...
