Hello, this is my first post. I'm trying to realize the simulation of a boat (a tow) with openFoam, in particular a drag evaluation.
the first question is: which would be the computational resources to do a good job??

I have just my pc with an intel core duo 2,4 ghz 4GB ram..

Ram is a little bit low. CPU is not that important, it will only take longer to finish a run - but with too less ram, your simulation will NOT run.

How many cells do you use?

I am working with ansys for a multiphase transient simulation. i have a 3 d geometry which i have meshed with about 500000 tetrahedral elements.

The simulation has been running for a week now. The computer config i have is-
Intel Core2duo E8400 @3 GHz processor
and 3.5 GB ram

please suggest appropriate upgrade with wich i can run even complex simulations quickly.

Depends on your definition of a complex case...

You can try to purchase a quad core cpu or a hexa core cpu (when it fits to your mainboard), but don't expect a miracle to occur. 500 000 cells is not much, running it on 6 cores will not be 3 times faster!
However, switching to an Intel i7 will speed it up for sure, this cpu's are way faster than an old core2 duo.

But you should always consider, transient simulations are usually not that fast, and a multiphase simulation will also not speed it up. Even a quad core i7 will not finish it while you're just having a coffee. So it might be necessary just to be patient and wait until it's finished.
