Starting a new CFD consulting firm

Hi,

We are going to start a CFD consulting center with aim to provide acadamic training and small consultation works to the industrial people using Openfoam and Star CCM+. We are planned to buy 5 systems with following configuration.

Intel core i7 9508M processor
8 GB RAM
1 GB Graphic card
150 HDD

with Linux OS. Is it enough to run a small cases with max. of 2M cells? And should we buy a work station or server ? If so, which is the best and cheap workstation for us?

Hi!

The CPU is OK, the RAM quite good, but today RAM is extremely cheap so I would go for at least 12 or 24 GB (i7 core use Triple channel, so you need 3 or 6 modules).

Is your 150 GB HDD a SSD disc? You won't gain much speed reduction from SSD, better buy more RAM.

We decided to go with 12 GB RAM. What about the servers? We need to install Star CCM+ in server. Please guide us.

Ive been told that 4 GB/core on the cluster is good for STAR-CCM+, though 6 GB/core is ideal.

Ryne-I'm curious where you got your memory numbers from. In fact I work at CD-adapco and we recommend 2GB/core as a strict minimum and in fact its a good number. We have thousands of cores world-wide here and virtually all have 2 or 3GB/core. There none with 4 or 6 and we wouldn't recommend that much. Certainly it doesn't hurt, but if you need 6GB/core, you would almost always be better off with 2 cores with 3GB each.
