Courant number

I realize that the Courant number is derived from the discretized equation obtained using FVM or FDS. Would it not then depend on the discretization method used and also the type of elements. For instance does it still hold if FEM or some other method was used where deltax is not exactly the distance between two nodes or two faces.

Thank you in advance.
