Hi every body.
Does any one have any information about the computer code for CFD simulation in subways naming "Subway Environment Simulation (SES)" ?
It's from Parsons Brinckerhoff. I googled for the software and I didn't find any link to download the code or the manual. Can anybody share data about this software?

Is there any reason you're specifically into SES? What kind of data are you interested in?

AFAIK, it's discontinued. There's http://www.railroaddata.com/rrlinks/Detailed/2775.html which tries to link to it, but that FTA link has rotted to uselessness. Did you try and contact the FTA about SES?

http://www.ntis.gov/search/product.aspx?abbr=PB254789 claims to provide the user manual for 95$, but the download size of ~44 MB is really weird - the original manual is only 4MB and the CD ~16MB, so this is probably a scan. Also the page count of 1515 is weird, since my manual has only 620 pages, and Oct 1975 is way behind the August 2001 one I got... This is a .gov URL, so it should be official, but nonetheless this all sounds odd.

Anyway, due this lack of support (and the really buggy VB input program, that I can tell you...) you might want to consider using a different software.

Hi Karkar

Many Thanks for your reply. As you said the support is very restricted from the developers, especially for the bodies out of US. The time when I was looking for the SES, It was not clear how we can buy that code and we tried our chance by giving money for that manual (the link from .gov) for possible addressing to the code. However, we couldn't have in hand the SES code from any sources.

Clearly, focusing on the things for which the SES was developed , I am going to simulate ventilation systems of tunnels and fire and fire products propagation in such systems in possible accident. Would you please share your data about this area. Do you know any alternative software with the same or better capabilities developed especially for such jobs?

alireza, did you ever get to download SES?
Have you found any other software suitable for tunnel designing?

Hi,

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the software any where. The developer (It was a company, I couldn't remember its name) told me that it's restricted to sell the software to any one (especially out of US).

However, using commercial CFD software, I kept the work on-going . It seems that SES is a one-dimensional code, while all CFD packages can simulate 3D flows in tunnels.

Hi,

I recently saw the post here and am wondering if you are stilling looking for manual coding. I have subway enviornment design handbook and am currently having some question regarding a portion of the air pressure calculation.

It would be great if we can help each other out.

Actually, I'm not into coding of tunnel ventilation now. But some of my colleagues are developing a code for just comparison with the 3D simulation results.

If I can help you, it's my pleasure.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

I am currently using Subway Enviornmental Design Handbook from 1974. I am following the design sample within the book and have found out that some of the calculation do not make sense.

In section 3-91, the ß(T) values provided by the book on the Post Portal Transient look amusing since the equations provided do not dervie the same answer as indicated in the table.

I was using the equations as shown in the attachments below

2.0.jpg

2.1.jpg

2.2.PNG

3.PNG

I have no idea why 0.137 can be achieved for ß(T) when T = 20.

ß(T) = 0.080 is from Portal Entry calculation.

Do you have a clue on what may happen?

I can forward you a complete set of PDF if you need more information.

Thank you for your help.

As I said, I'm not currently working on that. However, I have shared them with my friends and I'll let you know if I get any feedback.

Hi I just got the answer from another group. The

solution to that question was the log -1 with base e is considered to be exp function and log with base e is ln. By changing the formula to this form, the two equatios mentioned earlier would work perfectly.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hello,
I am very sorry for the intrusion in this technical conversation.
I am working in a large engineering company and we need a SES senior expert with knowledges in tunnels, for railway, trams, and others. The job is in Barcelona. Do you know anybody interested? Do you know some forum of SES tunnel where I can get in touch with experts in SES tunnels?
Thanks in advance

Are you looking for some technical answers? If that is the case, I can give you a hand, depends on how complex it is, you may need a hire a contractor or personal for the project. Beaware that most of the experts online can give you hints and directions, not the entire details.

SES is now publically available at www.nevergray.biz/ses.

Better late than never. The United States Government started banning the distribution of the program in 2003. After two years of negotiations, the restrictions were lifted.

Let me know if you need any additional information the Subway Environment Simulation computer program.
