Hi,

Well it depends which SEM method you want to use, continious/discontinious, tet/hex, modal/nodal

A general reference and introduction would be:

"Spectral/hp Element Methods for CFD" by George Em Karniadakis and Spencer J. Sherwin. Oxford University Press, 2005 (second edition), 1999 (first edition).

"High Order Methods for Incompressible Fluid Flow" by M. O. Deville, P. F. Fischer, E. H. Mund, M. J. Ablowitz Cambridge University Press; 1st edition (August 15, 2002)

nodal, tet, continious Tim Warburton http://www.useme.org/

modal, tet, continious George Karniadakis, Sherwin

modal, hex, continious Paul Fischer

nodal, discontinious Jan S Hesthaven

This should give you a general overview of the method.

This refers to the bases used. If bases are continious then your field will be continious meaning that a shared face will have same values on it.

On the other hand discontinious means that you might have a jump between elements. I.e on one face you would have a different value to the neighbouring face. Thus the field is discountinious as the data is not the same across faces and there might be on the same face different values for different elements that share the face.
