Preprocessor - Ansa?
 

Hi,

do you have any recommandations about using ansa as preprocessing tool for internal flows (hvac) in combination with FLUENT and StarCD? As far as I know there are different options for automatic mesh creation: a) use ansa for everything and export the create volume mesh using asession file or script b) use ansa for the surface mesh and create the volume mesh with tgrid(Fluent) or proam (StarCD)

If you prefer the second option, what tool is 'better' suited for internal flows?

me again ...

is it possible to buy a tgrid or proam licence without getting the 'main' tools? As I understand the export and import function from Fluent an StarCD it should be possible to use e.g proam together with Fluent and tgrid with StarCD!?

Hi Fab,

I use Ansa in combination with STAR-CD. I am also familiar with Fluent. Based on my experience it is best way to create surface and volume mesh in ANSA - it is the fastest way. Quality of Mesh is comparable to Tgrid and proam. This is valid for pure Tet-meshes. If you need prism-layer at wall, ANSA is not my first choice. It has some problems with internal flow -geometry and prism-layer creation. In this case I switch to proam.

I would recomend using STAR-CCM+ as a meshing tool too, probably best to use ansa for surface mesh (which it is very good at) then CCM+ to create a poly or trimmed vol mesh.

Hi Fab,

I have seeen some presentations on hypermesh and tried to do some on my own but I had problems with the logic behind. It is not the way my brain is working ;-)

In my opinion ANSA is the most powerful tool for surface meshing and I have seen a loot. We also started to evaluate ANSA in combination with STAR-CD's polyhedral technique and this is also a very powerful combination.

The major advantage is that you can create a very fine and detailed surface mesh with ansa (which would create millions of tets) and make a polyhedral volume-mesh with PROAM or STAR-CCM+ which give a fraction of # of cells. Unfortunately there are some nasty edges with some very strange shaped polyhedral cells (I never would not trust simulation results in this area). But anyway, it is worth to try this way. It is really amazing: the same surface mesh give you 4 million tets and only 300.000 polyhedrals (and it does not look coarse). Unfortunately we could not start to compare numerical results due to some problems with operating system and the solver. But I am looking forward in seeing this.
