Hi everybody, I have a cfd case saved in Ensight format and I'm trying to visualize it. I've tried many visualizers as Paraview and MayaVi but it crashes all the time! Probably the problem is that my file is too big (.geo file is ~450 MB)...my PC is quite new (P4 4GHz; 1 GB Ram) so I don't think is an hardware problem...any idea? thank you

Paraview works just fine with Ensight files. If it can't open - and I guess 450 MB isn't too much for Paraview - there could be something wrong with your files.

Yes you are right: now I'm trying with a 77 MB .geo file and I have always the same prolem. I found another difference between a case that works and my case that crash: the first format type is "ensight" and the second is "ensight gold" but after googleing it, it seems like there is no problem for paraview with ensight gold...any suggestion? thank you

What kind of cells do you have in your Ensight file? I had problems with n-faced polyhedral cells and paraview.

Paraview will read ensight gold format. So just read the case into EnSight and export the gold-format from there

it's mixed hexa-tetra. The mesh was generated with pro-am from star-cd

the problem is that I don't have ensight! In fact I use Comet solver and I want to export the case in an open source visualizer: to have a common format I have to save the case in Comet as an ensight file and than read it in paraview

"ensight all binary same - - -" works for me to go from Comet to Paraview (reading in as big-endian), but I've only tested that with hexa grids.

A known issue in Paraview is with ASCII ensight files, you need to remove the leading spaces from lines containing strings.

I ususally do the same and for hexa grids it works for me too...probably it's about the mixed hexa-tetra mesh...

In the various data files (not the case), when you are using ASCII format, there are lines of text headings, at various positions in the files. You need to strip the leading spaces from these lines.

Hi clhona

If your binary files has been written in a pc, try changing the "byte order" to "little endian".

For ASCII files you must clean the leading white spaces at the end of the lines as Charles said.

Ensight provides a utility called ens_checker which may be useful to discover some problems in your case file. I guess this utility is available in the Ensight's trial copy.

Regards

Renato.

p.s.: Ensight Gold is not equal to Ensight format.
