Hi All,
I'm having a silly doubt. Please clear it for me. Will the mass transfer takes place from gas-solid-gas. Thanks in advance. |

For heterogeneous chemical reactions which involve a gas phase and catalyst particles, gas diffuses into the pores of the catalyst where reactions occur. Basically it is the adsorption process of the gas molecules into the inner surface of the catalyst pores. After the reaction is completed, desorption occurs and the gaseous products return to the bulk gas phase. Both the adsorption and desorption process occur due to the concentration gradient of the reactants and products between the bulk and catalyst surface and are mass transfer process in true sense.

subha_meter explanation was perfect, I highly recommend you to read the section 18.3 of the second edition of Transport Phenomena book (from Byron Bird), you'll find an excellent example which consist in a diffusion process involving heterogeneous catalytic chemical reaction in case you wanna know more about mass transfer in this kind of systems.
Best regards |
