3D flow past a wing
As part of a project at uni I am investigating the effect of winglets on aircraft drag reduction. To do this I am modelling a wing, both with and without winglets, and simulating the flow in Fluent.
I have imported a solid model of the wing in to Ansys Workbench and have the geometry laid out ready to be meshed. I have put a box enclosure around the wing and I was just wondering if anyone could give me any hints on how to increase the mesh density in regions close to the wing, particularly around the wing tips. The mesh density will ideally decrease in regions further away from the wing. I am new to Ansys and have ran a simulation in 2D but have never worked in 3D before.
Any suggestions anyone? I've tried doing projections on all the faces of the enclosure and created new planes on the wing tips and made projections on there in order to map face mesh it later on. However when I make surfaces for the projections Ansys doesn't like it when they intersect. It's also incredibly long winded. Surely there is a better way of doing it?
You can try to put inflation in ansys meshing. It will create a denser mesh around the wings which will help you capture the boundary layer effects. For inflation select the domain as your body and the surfaces of the wing as the boundary.
Caution: Keep an eye upon the max skewness when you put inflation. In any case it must not exceed 0.98.
Another option is to adapt the region around the wings in fluent. This option is available in the adapt menu in fluent. This is safer, as till now I have not found problems with skewness when I have used this method.
