Dear Friends

It seems like i'm going to be offered a phd in NTUA(Athens)Mechanical Engineering School, and wont to know your opinion on the subject. Does a PHD worth it? Will i have better job offers after that, will it help me with my future? And your opinion on NTUA (how do you rate it?)

thanks!

Stelios Kyriacou

I am also in NTUA (PhD student). I am not sure if many people over here know NTUA... By the way, what is your subject?

It depends on what you want to do as a job. It will open some doors and close others. If you want to pursue research in a high tech industry or academia then it is pretty much a requirement. If you want to become a general manager then it may well harm your promotion prospects although this does vary from country-to-country and to some extent industry-to-industry.

Hi George I've been working ("or wont to work") with mr Giannakoglou in LTT of Mechanical Engineering school. The general subject is air dynamic optimization. I'm more into Neural Networks(N.N.) meaning that there are ways to help an Evolutionary Algorithm(E.A.) to reduce its cpu cost by implementing N.N. inexact pre evaluation. All that is already been done by other phd students in the LTT (most of them are ready), so my part is more like to use SOM as a tool to help engineers to understand more than 3d pareto fronds (i also have more ideas i wont to explore as well, such as, a NEW, full N.N. optimization method ). The LTT also uses gradient based methods, Adjoint and has a first time publication in 2nd order adjoint gradient calculation. And more... Thats all from just one lab (LTT)imagine what happens on NTUA as an Institute!!!!! So its time for the people in this and other forums to learn about NTUA.

Stelios Kyriacou p.s. i would also like to know what's your subject? Giorgo to egrapsa sta aglika mono kai mono gia na to diavasoun kai oi ypolipoi !
