OpenFoam and Linux
 

I would like to install OpenFoam on my PC, and I'm not sure what version of Linux is the best choice for an OpenFoam platform. running OpenFoam on windows is not an option.

OpenFoam on Windows is not an option. I'm running OpenFoam on Ubuntu and I'm really satisfied with it. Ubuntu is easy and user-friendly, can be used also by new Linux users. Hope this helps!

Thank You for the advice, I'll browse the Net for Ubuntu and see what I can find. The thing is, Linux is completely new to me.. i hope this will work. Thank You!

BTW,

What is the most user-friendly Linux distribution? Ubuntu, as already said? Does it work on labtops? Does it recognize easily peripherals like scan, camera? I have heard about open-suse too. What do you think?

If your internet connection is fast enough, you can log in www.distrowatch.com and download the distribution you like

i have a 32 bit Pentium M50 processor on my Toshiba satellite notebook (1.7 GHz and 1000 MB RAM), and as i just saw on the Ubuntu page - it requiers 64 bit architecture. so, what distribution should i download?

In my case, I tried to install Fedora/RedHat on my computer, I could not, I took my computer to a techni in linux, and He installed OpenSuse It seems to me that there are some inner details to the linux kernel that produces such behaviour. The best you can do is to consult a linux expert, Good Luck

Opensuse is very user friendly, well integrated and support a lot of hardware without tweaking. Give it a try.

i found a link http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distri...oad#Understand it is supposed to describe the way you should install Linux (i think it's red hat 9.0) and set up a dual boot system ...

I have a 32bit laptop, Ubuntu is not only fo the 64bit architecture. You can download it directly from: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download standard personal computer version ;-)

Use SuSe-10.1 or 10.2. This is what OpenFOAM is developed on and guaranteed to give no porting trouble.
