Default help on the close wake behind the cylinder

For flow past cylinder in the Reynolds number range of 0 < Re < 40, why does the flow separate at a certain Re? What's the physical mechanics of the forming the closed wake? Why does the length of the closed wake increase with Re? Thanks.
