Hello, I am PhD student in the first month, i would like to work on spillway simulation and I am confused about which suitable codes can i use?? because i heard that some 3D dimension codes need 5 days to complete one run so many friends advised me to choose 2D codes to simulate the problem?? Please i need some advise about that subject????
Thank you very much

I think you must first start with 2d codes I.e. perform simulation for 2 dimensions. Also, first simulate the problem for the simplest case with basic boundary conditions. Assume most of the conditions tonkeep the problem aimpler. Then slowly make it complex and then finally you can go for 3d. This way you will be able learn. Since you are in first year of PhD I think you have time on your side. So proceed gradually.
