I remember in my intro to CFD course my professor said in the early days of CFD someone proposed the idea to fill a stadium with people, give them all signal flags, and somehow carry out a coordinated effort to send messages to people sitting on the field who would interpret the flag waving signals and progress the written computation. Has anyone heard of this, or know of any literature related to this idea? Thanks!

A well-known Chinese sci-fiction novel named The three-body problem (三体)has similar plot, many many fighters carry white and black flags to execute binary commands

Lewis Fry Richardson had the idea to build a "forecast-factory". A stadium filled with thousands of people (with calculators) to perform the calculations. The guy in the center should coordinate the forecast with signal lights and telegraph communication.
