Does any one know how i can calculate the Drag coefficient from total force in phoenics CFD of my 3 blade horizontal axis wind turbine ? When i'm trying to calculate from the output tab in domain settings, it is asking me to give the Reference area in X, Y and Z.

I'm a bit confused about calculating area along X,Y and Z axis. can any one help me on how i can find the area ?

Blade length is 3 meter
total surface area is 5.86 square meters
No of blades 3
rotor area is 0.73 square meter.


would be grateful if you can also tel me how the power can be measured?

I'm using NACA 4412 airfoil.

If any one wants my model of turbine , i can send the solid works file for his/her simulation (through email). furthermore even if anyone can tell me how can i find the areas along x, y and z-axis of attached blade , than i would be grateful. I also would like to know how can the lift be calculated in phoenics.

I have the same problem about calculating lift on NACA 4412, can anyone help?

Hi,

Please see the below for a link to information on the force-summation output and the drag-coefficient calculation:

You are looking for this formula here, which calculates the drag coefficient:
Cd_i = F_i/(0.5*RHO_ref*Vel_ref*Area_(ref,i))

You have your reference area, and I will assume you have a reference velocity and density too. From this, if you have included only the rotor elements in the force summation, this will give you a drag coefficient in the spreadsheet, which is output during the run.
You can calculate the moments by inputting the coordinate which you would like your moments to be taken around in the final 3 boxes of that menu.
