How to reference paper which is in review

Hi,

I'm sending a paper to a journal. I have previously send in another paper which is now in review. It uses the same solver and it was verified by some test cases given in that paper. So for this new paper, do I have to include the verifications again? I have also some results in the old paper which I would like to mention in the new paper.

May I know how is it usually done? If I just quote my old paper and if it is not accepted in the end, then the reference will not be valid.

Thank you very much.

You can cite it as "Submitted to XYZ Journal" although you're right, if ultimately the manuscript is not accepted, the reference becomes meaningless.

Once it is accepted, you can list it as "XYZ Journal, to appear." until it finally has a volume/issue assigned to it.

you could refer to it as a preprint and you could also (not essentially) put it on your web and give its link too. it is common way (unlike what is stated in author guide) just know that peoples sometimes refer to a priviate communication as a reference!

however, to simplify review procedure, it is worth to include non-published paper as supplementary material.
