TVD-schemes

Hi all, can anyone help me understand what are TVD schemes? I don't mean define. I would like to know at which stage of solution do we apply this. I mean how does it work with respect to time and space steps in a solver.

I would appreciate any help.

Re: TVD-schemes

Typically a TVD scheme functions by applying limiters to the values of the face variables. These face variables are extrapolated from the nodal or cell-centered variables, and if anything other than a first-order extrapolation is used non-physical extrema can develop. So the face values are limited prior to the face flux computation, or the face fluxes themselves are limited. Look up limiters on the Wikipedia or google for more.

I recommend the book by E.F.Toro, it comes with a set of comprehensives references to basic Riemann solvers and their TVD counterpart as well as source codes for its implementation.
