More spam problems

We have once again been targeted by a spammer that posted > 1,000 spam messages here. This made the system move all real messages into the archive. I will restore this later today when I have access to a computer that can login to the CFD Online server. You can post messages here now, but please don't repost messages that you have already posted since everything will be restored in a few hours time.

Problem fixed for now. I restored the messages that had been moved to the archive and removed all spam. I hope our switch to another forum software will help to control these spam attacks.

Jonas, I've seen folks move a website to vBulletin, with message ports & so forth, in a few days. You may want to seriously work on getting the front-end in place - keep the archives in the old format until ported - then port, at will.

Re: More spam problems

Yea, we got vBulletin running in about 10 minutes. But we will not rush this through. We have used the same software for 10 years and I think that we can manage with our old software for a few more months while we install and adapt the new software properly. Besides, the new vBulletin version (3.8), which we want to use, was not launched until just recently (Jan 2009).

When we switch to the new software it should be well integrated with the rest of CFD Online and it should have most functionality active and working properly.

The import of the >100,000 old messages from our old forum software required quite a lot of work and programming, but that is now finished and we have a vBulletin based forum running with messages dating back more than 10 years from our old software. Peter Jones has made a great job with this. We are now working on the layout of the forum and we are implementing all features that we want active (LaTeX functionality, search engine optimization, spam protection, ...).

I apologize for the wait. Perhaps it would have been a better strategy to work on this in silence at first and then launch it more quickly once we mentioned it, but I wanted to give everyone a chance to give their opinion about switching to another forum software before we put a lot of work into it.

I hope that you will like the results when we launch it. I'm afraid that we will not be ready to launch it in a couple of more months though. But please stay tuned.

Re: More spam problems

I think it would be neat to have a research forum included. By this I mean a section where students/researchers can post what projects they are working on and any questions they might have in terms of set-up, data collection etc. Most of the projects I worked on in my grad/phd work, as well as research after school, involved a project and then coding to try to simulate the data. So, it would be related to CFD.

thanks
