Close to Final Preview of New Discussion Forums

We have done a close-to-final rehearsal of the switch to a new forum software here on CFD Online. You can see a preview of the new forum here:

http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums-test/

The preview includes a recent import of al current forums on CFD Online as well as an import of an OpenFOAM forum.

All registrations are closed in the preview forum and it is intended to give everyone a chance to affect the layout or the import of messages before we finally make the official switch.

What do you guys think about the new forum? Should we change anything? Have you got any advice on how we could improve the new forum?

When you have registered you can upload an avatar. However, registration is closed in the preview forum.

Hi,

On something I posted ( http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums-tes...al-needed.html ), where I indicated a website, the address is shown incomplete, though the link is correct. But I think it would be better to have the complete address, if, for example, you want to copy it.

Very nice - Peter & CFD-Online team. Very nice indeed. Interface is professional & clean.

Once folks get used to how to use the link tools & so forth, the posts will tighten up & look more professional.

This bold step is exactly what CFD-Online needed. Best of success.

The forum by default reduces the displayed length of long URL addresses in order to keep the messages more clean. Some URLs can be very long. To copy an URL you just have to right-click on it and select "Copy Shortcut".

I'm glad that you like it. We have done a lot of work on this behind the scenes. Imports are finally working well and the entire forum is search-engine optimized to get better indexed in Google and other search-engines. We have more than 200,000 old messages dating back more than 10 years, so getting all these into Google will hopefully make the entire forum much more visible for people who search for information. We have even managed to remove those irritating WebKitFormBoundary tags from all previous messages, errors that you guys who insist on using Safari produce in the old forum software ;-)

They come from Google's Chrome Browser... :)

Is there no way to see the threading (who replied to who)? Is there no way to know easily what new posts have been added recently?

Re: Close to Final Preview of New Discussion Forum

The forum can be viewed in threaded mode. When you are viewing a thread you can switch between linear (default), hybrid and threaded mode using the display menu. The settings are remembered so that you don't have to set this the next time you return. When you are registered the forum will also be able to show new posts since your last visit.
