We're doing some valve flow modelling for a customer of our's. A $5000 flow analysis has saved them a $50,000 hunk of scrap metal on the shop floor that would not have met the performance requirements of the specification. How's that for a benefit?

In certain cases, apart from direct cost involved, the physical situation also plays a major obstacle for going in for real life experiment, like high temp and all. Modelling helps in that.

I think it always comes down to time and money. Perhaps this is more true in industry than in academia, but I think it is true across the board.
Tools that save time and money will be used because it makes sense to use them. If performing a test can be done in a few days, and for very little money then there is no reason not to run the test. In the example that I used, running the test would involve quite a bit of time and cost. First the valve parts would need to be cast, then machined. The machined parts would have to be inspected and assembled. Finally the test would be run. That valve design would not pass the required flow at the required pressure differential which would have left the designers with a $50000 piece of scrap. A simulation could be performed in a few days for much less money to find out the same thing. When the valve is built, a test will still be performed because the specification requires it, however, the valve will meet the performance requirements. Regards, Alton |
