I am currently studying a degree in mechanical engineering and I have recieved an assignment on the suitability of using CFD techniques to assist a company in new product development and product optimisation.

The main purpose of the assignment is to give a balanced objective review of the technology available to the company.

I have tried to find the information I require in various books, but so far I am struggling to find anything substantial.

Although I do not wish anyone to give me the complete answer, any information that you feel is relevent to my problem, then your help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Hopefully you will make good use of the wealth of information within this website and its links.

You have not stated the specific area of interest to determine if you need to approach a CFD company who may already have similar product areas well covered with supporting literature helpful in your own product optimisation.

(1). If the company is new to CFD, then it is going to take a while to implement the CFD approach in the product design and optimizatin. But, the time required is "relative". It depends on the engineers, the computer equipment, and the company support or policy. So, you will have to consider these three issues. (2). CFD has been used in many field of product design, such as commercial civil aircraft design and development, military aircraft development, jet engines and turbomachinery for power generation, etc... (3). In those field I've just mentioned, there is normally a sequence of analysis codes used in the development an design. These are performance code, 1-D code, 2-D code, 3-D inviscid code, and finally the 3-D viscous code. (4). It is obvious that 3-D viscous analysis takes a longer time to do and provides more detailed information about the component flow field. But, normally, 3-D viscous analysis is not the only approach used in the design loop. (5). The other important factor involved is that the codes used are very specific to their product, you simply don't use a 3-D viscous code of turbine passage flow analysis for the aircraft wing design. It is quite obvious that one is internal flow and the other is external flow problem. (at the academic research level, these are all fluid dynamic problems using the same governing equations and the boundary conditions. But, in reality, they are not the same problem because they are not the same product. ) (6). So, these are general guide lines, it is going to take a while to develop a sequence of analysis specific to the product design, so that CFD can be part of the loop and can impact on the quality of the design. (7). In addition, I am assuming that you are familiar with the CFD operations, which requires geometry model, mesh generation, physical models, suitable solver and algorithm, pre- and post-processing capabilities.

Hello Richard, maybe I can give you an example.

I did algorithms and codes for on-line tool for hydraulic problem of multibranch oilpepline plus problem of fast search of optimal regimes for oilpipelines and for large pipenetwors of heat-transfer systems.

It really worked now on siberian oilpeplines: Anjerka-Angarsk, Anjerka-Omsk, Omsk-Pavlodar and on others. After optimization win are 10-15%!
