Does anyone know where I can get a utility to convert plot3d grid files into a "generic" node and element file that I can read into a commercial package?

With a plot3d file you can create a grid file that can be readed by commercial codes if you use Tiger mesh generator from Catalpa software. There is an online demo in their site.
