First Announcement and Call for Papers

4th International Symposium on Computational Technologies for Fluid/Thermal/Chemical Systems with Industrial Applications: "building better products with CFD". August 4-8, 2002, Hyatt Regency Vancouver, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Co-sponsored by ASME, JSME and KSME, in conjunction with ASME/JSME/KSME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference

Symposium web-site: www.cfdcanada.com/pvp20.html ================================================== ====================

* Abtract submission: October 26, 2001 * Draft paper submission: January 11, 2002 * Final papers submisson: April 12, 2002

>>> Scope: Industrial application of Computational Fluid Dynamics ("building better products with CFD") requires the solution of complex fluid-flow problems in conjunction with equipment design and process and product development. For the successful solution of these problems, a high degree of coordination between industrial CFD engineers, software developers, consultants and academic scientists is necessary. This symposium, to be held for the fourth time, addresses these issues by focussing on computational modelling of industrially relevant fluid flows in interaction with participating media (solid confinements, porous structures, dispersed phases, plasmas, etc.) and physical/chemical phenomena (diffusion transport, thermal stress, flow induced vibrations, electromagnetic transport, heat generation & dissipation, electrophoresis, phase change, combustion, CVD, chemical reactions, etc.). Participation from the industry is especially encouraged.

>>> Topics: Specific topics may include (but are not limited to): * The use of CFD in hardware design, process optimization and product development applications for industry; * Large-scale numerical studies with industrial applications; * Advanced turbulence modeling and Large Eddy Simulations for industrial flows; * Modeling of fluid-solid interactions via conjugate heat transfer, thermal stress or load coupling; * Integration of complex physical/chemical models into CFD; * Multi-scale (microscopic-macroscopic) modeling and multi-scale model integration; * Multidisciplinary and multi-fidelity analysis; * CFD code interfaces (code-to-code, grid-to-grid, flow to stress, etc.) and integrated code development; * Object oriented CFD code architecture and CFD command languages; * Grid generators and pre-processors; * Novel solvers, codes and algorithms, numerical accuracy analysis; * CFD implementation for model based control; * Flow visualization and thermal/chemical species "mapping"; addressing single and multiphase, laminar and turbulent flows, free surface flows, flows with phase transition, molecular flow, plasma flow, etc.

Applications may stem from, amongst others: * chemical process industry; * food processing industry; * automotive & aerospace industry; * manufacturing industry; * energy conversion & combustion; * micro-electronics industry; * biological & environmental studies; * nuclear industry; * pharmaceutical & medical industry.

>>> History: The first Symposium, held in San Diego in conjunction with the 1998 ASME/JSME PVP Conference, consisted of 16 Sessions, in which 66 contributed and 6 keynote papers were presented by authors from industry, academia, CFD consultants and software vendors, representing 20 different countries. Subsequently, equally successful Symposia were held in Boston, 1999 and Atlanta, 2001. Papers were published in ASME volumes PVP-377-1 and PVP 377-2, PVP-397-1 and PVP-397-2, and PVP 424-1 and PVP 424-2, respectively.

>>> Keynote lectures: The symposium has always succeeded in attracting very interesting keynote speakers, addressing various novel developments in fluid-thermal, fluid- chemical, and fluid-solids modelling with industrial applications. Keynote speakers of the first three Symposia included Prof. Brian Spalding (CHAM), Dr. Ashok Singhal (CFDRC), Prof. Y. Matsumoto (Univ. of Tokyo), Prof. David Gosman (Imperial College), Dr. Ellen Meeks (Reaction Design, Inc.), Prof. Keisuke Sawada (Tohoku University), Prof. Tezduyar (Rice University) and Prof. Shigeo Fujikawa (Hokkaido University).

For this fourth Symposium, invitation will again be extended to prominent CFD experts from various branches of industry and academia, to give keynotes on the application of process and structure integrated CFD in industrial design and optimisation problems.

>>> Tutorials & software demonstrations: One day and half day tutorials are being planned and CFD software demonstrations will be organized at the Conference. Please contact the corresponding organizers with proposals.

>>> Dates and location: The Symposium will be held in conjunction with the ASME/JSME/KSME Pressure Vessels and Piping Division Conference, August 4-8, 2002, at the Hyatt Regency, Vancouver, Canada.

>>> Papers and publication: Contributed papers will be accepted based on submitted abstracts and peer-review of full papers. Accepted full papers will be published in ASME Conference Proceedings bound volumes, which will be available at the Conference. In principle, all accepted papers will be invited for oral presentation at the Symposium. Papers can only be accepted if at least one of the authors participates in the Symposium and presents the paper.

>>> Schedule: * Submit 500-750 words abstract (no specific format required), using Fax, e-mailor regular mail, by October 26, 2001, to the appropriate Symposium Organizer. Include full names, addresses, affiliations and e-mail addresses of all authors. * Authors of accepted papers will be notified by Nov. 12, 2001. * Drafts of full papers are due January 11, 2002, for review. * Authors will be notified of reviewers' comments and final paper acceptance by March 4, 2002. * Final papers are due April 12, 2002.

>>> Registration: To register your name with the Symposium distribution list, please forward your full name, affiliation, address and e-mail address to: vvk@cfdcanada.com. For further information about the Symposium, please contact one of the organizers, or visit our Web-site: www.cfdcanada.com/pvp20.html
