Dear Friends,

I need to validate my 2D Euler code, can anyone tell me what are the most commonly used problems for validation?

Also, how about Navier-Stokes code validation?

Shear the top and the bottom walls..shear the right and the left walls..with gravity switched off.. then shear all the four walls.. u should see a dead zone at the center.

the next check can be pipe flow

Hi Ma,

Standard test caess are: (i) 2D incompressible,Euler flows: Flow over a NACA 0012 airfoil,circular arc bump

(ii) 2D,incompressible NS flows: Lid-driven Cavity,Flow over a circular cylinder,flow over a flat plate(all for laminar cases). (iii) 2D compressible NS: shock-wave boundary layer

It depends on the problem that you are solving(steady/unsteady). There are enormous literature and you need to go to the library and do some "search" and by doing so you gain a lot in the process. Hope your question is answered. If not you can tell about your problem. Some test cases are easier than others.

Hello Gita,

I am currently developing a 2D Euler code to study the plume dynamics: a detonation wave ( or a strong shock) traveling out from a combustor connecting with a CD nozzle. I've got some nice results from which the vortex, bow shock, reflected oblique shocks can be clearly oberved. I also read my code carefully more than one times. However, I've not yet run any validation case.

In the near future, I will update my code to a NS solver.

So I'd like to learn and know some commen sense and basic knowledge about code validation.

By the way, I found this forum here is a good place to learn CFD because of its fast-active-communication.

Hi Ma,

Glad to hear that you are getting good results. I have run the case for NACA 0012 airfoil for subsonic,transonic and supersonic cases using structured grids(using upwind schemes like flux-difference and flux-vector splitting schemes). I have tested out double blast wave(a very strong shock and there are multiple collisons going on)for 1D case. In future if you want to cross check I can help you. For a 2D NS,you can test lid driven cavity. It's fairly easy esp in stream fn-vorticity formulation. Yes this forum is good. There are good number of people who have got very good hands on experience with many CFD problems. Hope people benefit from this. And it's a good place to refresh one's knowledge of CFD also. Good luck in your research.
