Dear everyone ,

I am considering apply PhD program in Italy , relatively in Aerospace CFD (airwake of Bluff body) . However the barrier of language blocks me to the access more infomation . Does anyone know any University in Italy with famous computer cluster (except Politecnico di Milano and Politenico di Torino , I have already applied) . Universita La Sapienza of Rome is biggest in Italy , but seems that they inly focus Satelite relative topics (which I don't fancy very much)

Hope someone could give me more idea , I do appreciate that .

Universita di Pisa might have some, they have traditionally dealt with aerodynamics. They have a good wind tunnel for exemple. Universita di Roma used to have the best fluid mechanics in the country, at their Piva (I am not sure about the name) branch.

However, do not focus too much on where they have big clusters. One can do much with only a few cluster nodes today. Say five 1-2 GHz PIII's or P4's.

But I advise you to learn Italian if you intend to move there. English is not enough, it will not get you half way. Not even at uni.

What about going to Florence? Energy department of University of Florence has a long expertise in studying turbomachinery in collaboration with some industrial partners (Nuovo Pignone, Ansaldo, Fiat Avio, Ferrari) and with some other research institutes (mainly Von Karman): there are a lot of projects under EC funds. Main activities have to do with internal flows but there are some projects concerning external flows in collaboration with CIRA (Italian Aerospatial Research Center).

In addition, you should know that in Roma there are 3 universities:

Universita' degli Studi di Roma la Sapienza,

Universita' degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata,

Universita' degli Studi Roma Tre.

May be you could ask for information to the others: in 'Roma Tre' they have some research activities in fluid dynamics.

If you like working with cluster computers, you can go to University of Bologna. I don't know if they do aerospace CFD researches, but Cineca consortium in Bologna has the 32nd most powerful computer centre in the world (the biggest in Italy).
