If the general form of a variable that varies sinusoidally is

Y = Ym sin (kx-wt)

where Ym is some amplitude, k is the wave number and w is the angular frequency, how would you extrapolate this to 2 dimensions. i.e. what is the general form for a 2-d time dependent sine wave?

I am doing a CFD project on pressure variation in sound waves and will be extrapolating my 1-d code to handle a second space dimension.

Please help!!!

Generalization to 2D of the expression you wrote is

Y = Ym sin (kx +hy -wt)

which represents a travelling wave in the x,y plane with different speed in x and y directions (respectively w/k and w/h). Hope it helps,
