Visualisation of scattered data

I need to visualize scattered data, i.e., given (X, Y, VAR) where the nodes (X, Y) are just scattered in some domain. I want to draw contours of this data VAR. There could be holes in the domain like an airfoil and the contouring algorithm must blank these areas. I know that Tecplot can do this by first triangulating the nodes but it does not have the blanking option. Also I dont have access to Tecplot for my linux pc. Does anyone know of any freely available programs which can do this ? Or if I can get a triangulation program which is capable of removing the triangles inside a hole, I can use matlab or some other software for further visualization. Thanks

Hi Praveen,
Check out the CONTOUR package for the desired result and you can write your output(in your code)giving the options "blank"(how you want the airfoil to be plotted in the case of grid generation) and CONTOUR will plot it nicely. This works for structured but do not know about unstructured grid. Don't know if I have answered your question. gita |

hi, I have somehwta different problem. Let us say I have 2 dimensional plate(x-y) Now like pravin' example I have irregular set out points where I know the T(temeparture). I can plot contour from tecplot. But I want to calulate Q=int(T.dx.dy) here int in integration. How do it when the points are highly scattered. Prasat

Where can I get CONTOUR ? Can it handle arbitrary data sets. If I can triangulate a given set of nodes then I can use many available softwares, like tecplot, matlab, vigie, etc. I found a program to do this but havent tried it yet. It is written by Jonathan Shewchuk and is available for download; but it is not in the public domain. Search for his name on google. Once you triangulate you can easily evaluate integrals also using numerical quadrature.

Have you have such examples. I can make triangles out of my scattered data points Now the problem is I have T at these three vertices and also area is known is x and y corrdinate of each is known. But now to calulate the int(Tdxdy) Which T I should use (I have three T's here shall I take average and do the integration). I just want to know what will be the exact method for it. prasat

Hi Praveen,
Aero Dept.,IISc used to have it. I do not whether it can handle scattered data. I am also not aware if the software is available for free. gita |
